Biomass potential in the Netherlands
The report by DNV-GL aims to identify the most important biomass flows in the Netherlands that can be used for the production of green gas. It starts by making an inventory of the total and freely available biomass potential in the Netherlands for 2023 and 2035 and compares it with the current deployment of these biomass flows.
The study shows that the total potential of biomass will not increase significantly in the short term, but it will in the medium term(2035). This is mainly driven by the increasing potential of aquatic biomass. The total potential of the other biomass flows will not increase significantly in relative terms.
The freely available potential in 2035 is mainly based on the availability of agricultural residual flows, waste wood and aquatic biomass. Residual products from nature and landscape management, the food industryand organic waste contribute to a greater extent to the available potential for biomass in 2035. The overview of the total biomass potential is shown in the graph below.
The other biomass flows are not significant in comparison, butthey are important for their contribution to the biomass potentialthat can be used in other sectorsin the Netherlands.
Finally, the report finds that the freely available potential of Dutch biomass will grow over time, but mainly for wet biomass (69%).
