Energia: New study on a potential transformation path of Belgian refineries towards 2050 | 2024

Energia recently commissioned a study investigating how the refineries will look like in Belgium in 2050. Energia is a sector organisation in Belgium which represents companies active in the refining, distribution and storage of energy for transport, heating and industry as well as feedstocks product for the petrochemical sector. Together, theycontribute about 50% of the final energy supply. Belgian refineries play an essential role in this supply. In the transition to a fossil free society, understanding what the refineries of the future will look like is key to accelerate the energy transition.

To explore this question, Energia asked the expert agency Enersandi to carry out a study on the transformation trajectory of the Belgian refineries towards 2050. The study dives into the possible evolution of low-carbon and renewable liquid fuels for transport. Furthermore, it considers the evolution of the raw material for the petrochemical industry with an increasing share of renewable and recycled raw materials. The study finds that Belgian refineries can contribute to the production of both low cabron and renewable fuels as well as raw materials for the petrochemical industry. A number of policy recommendations anre provided to enable this sustainable transformation.
