Retrospective on roundtable workshop for seagoing shipping: Investing in green fuels for seagoing shipping | 2025
On January 7th, the Platform hosted a roundtable workshop to discuss the topic of investing in green fuels for seagoing shipping. The aim of the meeting was to identify the volumes of renewable fuel / energy carriers required for seagoing shipping to the European market. Furthermore, a gap analysis was provided by identifying current production facilities and capacity and the volumes that are still required.
Programme
- Welcome and Introduction, Loes Knotter, executive director Dutch Platform Renewable Fuels - Full presentation
- Assessing the FuelEU Maritime targets and the EU ETS reduction path, Kieran Green, studio Gear Up - Full presentation
- Mapping the facilities and projects announced for renewable fuels for seagoing shipping, Carlo Hamelinck, studio Gear Up - Full presentation
- Connecting with the Clean Energy Ministerial Partnership, Clean Energy Marine Hubs, Gerard Ostheimer - Full presentation
Key takeaways
- Must consider the time that it will take to develop new production facilities to meet upcoming demands, to have access to renewable fuel volumes required for meeting the 2035 -2040 mandated targets, investment must start now
- Must start investment into renewable fuel production facilities to meet targets of EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime
- There is enough production capacity, but these options are for existing markets not specifically targeted to the maritime sector.
- Initiatives like the Clean Energy Marine Hubs can support transition to upscaling renewable fuel markets but would benefit from greater international coordination.
- Call to action: Invitation to take the opportunity for bringing key messages for demand-supply coordination for Marine fuels into the high level messaging for the upcoming COP30 and G20 meetings. See for more info at the following link
