Repsol will invest more than €800 million to produce renewable methanol at the Tarragona Ecoplant

Repsol recently approved a historic investment to build the first plant in Europe to transform urban waste into renewable methanol in the Spanish region of Catalonia. Renewable methanol is a fuel that will play a significant role in the energy transition by defossilizing the transport sector along with providing an essential building block for circular products. A green light to invest in the Ecoplant was recently awarded by Repsol’s Board of Directors.
The facility will be located in Tarragona and is expected to receive an investment of over €800 million leading it to become the first plant in Europe to produce renewable and circular methanol from waste through gasification technology developed by Enerkem. The plant is planned to have the capacity to process 400,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per year and transforming them into 240,000 tonnes of renewable fuels and circular products. This project is planned to start up in 2029 and will create 340 jobs when entering into operation.
The project has been selected by the European Union to receive funding from the Innovation Fund program due to its high emission reduction potential and innovative nature. The Ecoplant is expected to reduce 3.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent during the first 10 years of operation according to the European Commission.
