Factsheet: double-sided auctions dedicated to renewable fuels for the maritime sector

Backround

On January 7th, the Platform hosted a roundtable for Seagoing Shipping to discuss the topic of investing in green fuels for the maritime sector. The aim of the meeting was to identify the volumes of renewable fuel and other energy carriers required for seagoing shipping to the European market. A gap analysis was presented which identified current production facilities and capacity and the volumes that are still required. We concluded that despite the growing production capacity for renewable fuels, these volumes are not specifically dedicated towards the maritime sector.

Platform is working on the publication of a white paper on double-sided auctions dedicated to renewable fuels for the maritime sector

Following this session, the Platform identified that auctions could be an interesting mechanism to address the disconnect between renewable fuel supply- and demand-markets and provide more pirce transparency. The core principles and examples of the double-sided auction were discussed with Platform Members in a meeting on March 13th (find the slides presented here). The Platform is working with this project group on the publication of a white paper to call for an industry-led initiative to organise an auction platform dedicated to the maritime sector. In the mean time, we have written a factsheet to explain the concept of double sided auctions.
