Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM): Action Plan to Accelerate Future Fuels | 2024
Under the Brazilian G20 and CEM Presidency, the Ministers of the 9 countries participating in the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) have published an Action Plan to accelerate Future Fuels. In this statement, the fuels-related workstreams affirm that Future Fuels are essential in the net zero transition. These Future Fuels consist of sustainable fuels that drastically reduce emissions such as sustainable biofuels, clean hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia, e-fuels, or e-methane. These fuels play an important role in the transport sector as well as industries like steel and cement production.
The need to accelerate the production and use of these fuels has been largely recognized. It is the mission of the Clean Energy Ministerial to intensify the collaboration between interested governments, industry and partner organisations.Their actions pledge to promote the acceleration of future fuels use and supply.
CEM members have organised with workstreams and partner organisation to promote increased demand for and use of Future Fuels. Moreover, they promote the integration of global supply chains by coordinating activities and bringing together the mainlinks in the value chain. For instance, one activity of the CEM workstream is to bring together public and private expertise in the energy-maritime value chains to plan large-scale marine hubs. Lastly, they aim to promote common and transparent standards for life cycle carbon accounting and sustainability of fuels.
