BioMob #1 The energetic potential of abandoned land - Presentation Platform

In Masterclass #1 of the Biomass & Mobilisation course of the Platform, different presentations were given about the potential of abandoned and underutilised lands. The Platform calculated the energetic potential of abandoned lands. From the presentation of Berien Elbersen, abandoned and marginal land is abundantly available in Europe. Therefore, there might be a potential for dedicated bioenergy crop growth without land competition with food.
This analysis shows that the energy potential is up to 4,680 PJ/a from marginal lands. In 2018, the total European road transport demand was 12,800 PJ. This means that 36% of EU transport energy can potentially be substituted by energy crops grown on marginal and abandoned lands.
